Looking Back... Fingerprinting

Over the years, I have included tons of lapbooks into our homeschool. My kids always find them to be so exciting, and I think they will continue to enjoy them in the upcoming years. One of my favorite lapbooks was the one I am going to post about now, which we completed in April of '09.

I first have to say that I LOVE crime scene and CSI type shows. In all the years that I have watched these shows, I never realized that there were still some basic things about crime investigation that I didn't know about. Until... I forced asked my son to work on this one :o) He ended up really enjoying it, and even I learned so much about the types of fingerprints, Dactyloscopy, the different fingerprint patterns, facts about fingerprints, and he also did the activities on taking visible and latent prints. The only supplies needed were general items we already had at home. My son got to learn how to 'lift' a fingerprint, and also why people in certain branches of law enforcement need to know how to do it, and how forensic scientists study fingerprints. He also made a fingerprint file, and studied some new vocabulary words (they chose some extra words too :-) The lesson was packed with all kinds of learning.

Cave Paintings...

At the beginning of January, I started using SOTW (Story of the World) for World History, and I have to say it's the best ever resource in the world :o) I love it, love it, LOVE IT! I haven't got to take many pics yet, but I did manage to click a few of the cave paintings we completed to accompany chapter one titled "The Earliest People." -The first Nomads become farmers, what they grew and what they ate, The Fertile Crescent, and why was it so fertile? along with a short study about Mesopotamia, the meaning of history, archaeology, historians, and so on...


It's just a terrific series! So, with that said... you know you'll be hearing more about it from me, lol.

Winter, Valentine Now Available!

Whew! I fell behind in my posting. So, here goes...

My newest unit is All Winter! A Fun Study! We had to sort of hurry through putting this one together (yes, sad I know) because of other pressing homeschool subjects (we can't do it all, can we?) Here are a few pics of this lapbook :o)

All Chocolate! A Fun Study!

This was pretty neat. My kids were amazed to find out that chocolate comes from seeds, and that at one time, you had to be rich to get it!

This chocolate unit has information and activities about the cacao tree, pods & seeds, where cacao trees grow, pollination, the midge fly, types of chocolate, cocoa beans, chocolate liquor, cocoa butter, cocoa powder, chocolate history, and cocoa farming today. Also included are word searches, comprehension worksheets, coloring pages, facts cards, game cards, and lapbook folds and flaps for creating a simple lapbook. Here are some pics of the lapbook we created from this unit.

*This is the unedited version of the unit. I have my own children complete each unit that I create before making it available for purchase. This way I am able to add more or change parts where I feel it is needed. Then, after I take some time to fix it up, the unit will be made into a final copy available for purchase on Currclick.

We Tried Something New...

I've seen the live classes on Currclick now for quite awhile. I've always avoided them because I assumed they would be boring. My kids don't have the greatest attention span when it comes to having to sit in one place and watch a video unless it's Spongebob :o(

I stumbled onto a live class being offered on Currclick free of charge, titled "Astonishing Atoms" by Science Jim. I decided to give it a shot because who can turn down FREE? The class turned out great. The kids learned so much more from it than I could have taught them, especially in 45 minutes. I was very pleased with the whole process. Signing up and logging in was simple. The teacher answered everyone's questions. My kids thought it was so cool to be able to ask a question, and the teacher would answer it. (Go figure... what about when I do this for them each and every day???)

Bottom line is, after purchasing another class today, I highly recommend these classes! It's lots of fun for the kids, extremely educational, and makes them feel like they are a part of a 'classroom' setting. I plan to purchase more of these classes in the future, and also plan to check out some of the other publishers offering these live classes. You can find the classes that my kids took part in HERE.
