We Tried SpellQuizzer!

I had an educational software spelling program stashed away in my "One day I'll get to it..." folder. I was thinking my homeschool things through (I find myself doing this like... all the time) and decided to give SpellQuizzer a whirl a few days ago, and... wow! The main purpose of this program is to record your child's spelling lists. The program also has some sample lists included which I didn't try out. Using my microphone, (a cheap $10 one from Walmart) I said each word, then gave a phrase that used the word. I even used my child's name within the sentences. Setting up the list up was a breeze. I've never used an easier program in my life! (... yes really!)

The greatest part is when my son was ready for his spelling test. I didn't tell him that it was my voice, and that I used his name in some of the sentences, and that I mentioned favorite hobbies, and so on. He loved it, and was laughing at many of the sentences. I'm going to sum this up by saying this program is AWESOME! It could also be used with any spelling program, and even for vocabulary words. The price of the program is more than fair (I've paid more for a single educational ebook.) I am glad to have the program, and will be using it for any and all spelling lists. If you are homeschooler like me, you probably like things that are simple, quick, and easy to follow. This program is, and I think it serves a great purpose!

Lightning Hit...

These are some pics of a tree in front of our house that lightning hit a couple hours ago. It hit the top and then went all the way to the base of the tree. I guess it was a really good lesson for my kids about the power of lightning, lol. The bang was so loud, and it knocked stuff off of our walls! I'm scared to death of that stuff, but it's pretty amazing all the same...

Plant & Animal Cells...

Last week, we created plant and animal cells. I let my kids decide which one they wanted to do. I wish we could have made edible cells, but I didn't know if I would pull my hair out could handle everyone in the kitchen at one time ;-) So, we used items that we could find around the house. The cells and labeling came out really great, and it was a very fun project! Here are a few pics :-)

Looking Back... Journals

Over the years, I have included tons of lapbooks and other activities into our homeschool. My kids always find them to be so exciting, and I think they will continue to enjoy them in the upcoming years. I am using my "Looking Back" posts to share on this blog some of these older activities that we completed.

Back in the beginning of 2009, a few of my kids started a journal. I never realized how neat they would turn out! We use the topics, ideas, and a few of the printables from the Giant Write Everyday book by Evan-Moor. The months of the year printables came from coloringbookfun. This is a great idea for kids of all ages. The idea of the journal was not really to scrutinize spelling, neatness, etc. It is aimed at helping them to be creative in their writing, and to enjoy writing. So, of course it's not all of the pages, but here are a few pics.

HERE :-)

I have also started a new series titled "Two-Day Study Series." My inspiration for this comes from topics that I or one of my children have had an interest for at some point. These topics didn't seem to have enough quality information to turn into a huge unit study, or enough fun activities to accompany a large unit. So, I created the Two-Day Study Series to offer these small, quick, but still very interesting topics :-)

It is not necessary that you take two days to do this study. It is only a suggestion. You can easily adapt this study to last one day, or several weeks. Website links will be provided in case you decide to continue on.

Included within this unit are the following: information and facts page about the Bird of Paradise, illustration/coloring page, questions worksheet, puzzle activity page, basic copywork pages, suggested vocabulary words including definitions, blank vocabulary cards, vocabulary word search, and suggested websites.

As with all units by homeschool bits, this was created to be simple and not overwhelming. The suggested grade level is K-5, but depending on how you use the study, it could be used for higher grades.
The topics in the Two-Day Study Series are different and interesting. They could be used many ways. Here are just a few:

- start off the school day with an interesting topic

- end the school day with an interesting topic

- a supplement to your regular curriculum

- to fulfill an interest that your child/student has

- to improve skills

... and many others!
